The Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) welcomed all members, including Hifsa Haroon Iqbal OBE DL, who was attending her first SACRE meeting.

Update on membership

The Clerk shared that there were a number of current vacancies expiring on the SACRE membership. Some incumbent members had responded to inform that they were happy to renew their positions. Responses were still awaited from a number of other members.

 

The Committee was informed that Judy Wyman would not be returning to her SACRE position. The organisation Judy represented would be contacted and asked if they would like to appoint a new representative.

 

Resolved: That the clerk of the SACRE committee would continue to work to find members to fill the vacant positions, with further updates being brought to a future meeting.

Resolved: That the minutes of the SACRE meeting held on 2024 be 7th February 2024 be approved and signed by the Chair.All matters arising were covered in the main agenda.

An Update on Key Issues Report of the Director for Children and Families pdf icon PDF 170 KB

The advisor took the SACRE members through an extract of the Key Issues report, stating that it included an evaluation of the workshops on Islam and Christianity- the Westhill Legacy project, in schools.

 

Comments received from the workshops were positive, and the advisor expressed thanks to key members for their hard work, namely Hifsa and Alison.

 

In addition, the advisor gave a brief summary on the following: -

 

  • Her attendance at the Joint National Conference with AREIAC and AULRE in Birmingham in June where the advisor was asked to deliver a presentation on Equality/Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) aspects on the second day of the conference.

 

  • The Ofsted subject report on RE/RS from April 20204

 

·         Lord Walney’s report Protecting our Democracy from Coercion.

 

Resolved: That the report be received and noted.

The advisor gave a brief update on NASACRE, sharing the website log in details for the Resource section of the NASACRE website.

 

The advisor also provided an update on the conference of NASACRE which was held in York in May 2024, where the good work of SACRE was shared with visitors. The advisor and the chair attended this conference.

 

At the conference details were shared of Lord Bilimoria's Call for Action and his Ready for work campaign - REady for Work campaign - ReThinkRE.

This call for action supports a chance for employers and business leaders to stand by students who have expressed an interest in a high quality education in religion and worldviews as preparation for the future workplace.

 

There was also an opportunity to network at the conference and discuss How SACRES can support high quality RE and Collective worship.

 

Resolved: That the NASACRE update be noted.

The advisor led members through a presentation, relating to the successful award of the Culham St Gabriel Grant, that would be used to support ongoing developments in schools.

 

The presentation covered the following matters:

 

• Governing board meeting agendas

o Governor information provided to schools

o Impacts of the focused training

o Results of mindset changes

 

• Equality/Equity, Diversity and Inclusion awareness

o Relevant laws and primary legislation

o School vision and values

o The Staffordshire agreed Syllabus

o What is diversity

 

• What is Culture

o Patterns of human behaviour

o How to achieve cultural awareness

o Promoting acceptance of culture in schools

o Looking at unconscious bias

 

• Teaching and Learning

o Strategic actions

o Looking at Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural development (SMSC)

o Relationship. Health and Sex Education (RHSE)

 

It was agreed that copies of the presentation would be shared with Committee Members.

The Clerk took members through the new SACRE website that had been created on the Staffordshire County Council website. This had been developed to provide easy access to information relating to SACRE. This included a link to the Entrust website which held a copy of the most recent agreed syllabus, and also provided a range of teaching resources.

 

Resolved: That the new website and contents be noted.

The SACRE Budget 2024-2025 - Report of the Director for Children and Families pdf icon PDF 62 KB

Members were provided with the monitoring report of the 2024/25 budget. The advisor confirmed that the figures reflected how successful the support for schools was and that future budget spend would continue to focus on support for schools primarily through workshops and the building up of resources.

 

A member asked how schools could access workshops, the process was explained.

 

Resolved: That the final SACRE Budget for 2024/25, be noted.

The advisor shared the Development Plan for 24-25 stating SACRE objectives, and timescales.

 

An upcoming idea suggested at the meeting, was to invite children to talk about their experiences after the workshops in a future SACRE committee meeting and the possibility of an event to celebrate good work in RE.

 

Resolved: That the development plan be noted.
