Volunteering for Staffordshire County Council

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Volunteers play a vital role in empowering our communities, adding real value to the work of the council and helping to improve our offer for residents across the county. We want to make sure people who volunteer for the council have a positive and consistent experience. With this in mind, Cabinet will be asked to consider and approve a new set of ‘volunteering principles’. These principles will be applied across the organisation to support our volunteers and help reinforce their importance to us and our communities. Alongside the new principles, a set of practical guidance and support documents have also been produced for staff responsible for managing and supporting our volunteers.

“Our dedicated army of volunteers across Staffordshire make an invaluable contribution to the council, this county and the communities we all serve.

Without them life would certainly be more difficult for many and I would like to thank them for the difference they make to so many lives.

We recognise too that volunteers can get a huge amount out of helping others and our new “volunteering principles” to make the experience flexible, enjoyable and personally rewarding.”

Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture

Reasons for the Decision – To consider the Council’s new volunteering principles and practical guidance documents for staff, ensuring that everyone who volunteers with the Council is supported to have a positive and consistent experience.

(b) That the implementation of the volunteering guidance documents for managers and colleagues supporting Council volunteers be approved.

(c)  That the proposed plan to embed this approach across the organisation and further develop our volunteer offer, noting the approach to monitor progress, be approved.
